Hey Topher, it was great to meet you at SES today... I knew you looked familiar! We had a great discussion about a lot of topics and what's funny is that I brought up Matt Mullenweg's name. Ironic that in a search for your name spelling I noticed your post here on this topic.

I have a TON of respect for Matt. For someone his age, he seems to really have his stuff together (I'd put him against Zuckerberg in a heart beat). Well, just 5 minutes into the interview I was shocked at how cool and calm Matt was, but how defensive and then combative Chris was. If I had to go just on tonality I would have awarded the match 100% to Matt.

Independent of the style of arguing (or lack thereof) I gotta side with the points Matt made. There are a few ways to look at this including "letter of the law" and "spirit of the law" but at the end of the day I think if both are applied they both point to Thesis needing to be GPL.

Honestly, looking at the Thesis site and video on their site I was pretty impressed and thinking about checking it out, but after hearing Chris talk I don't think I want to touch it.

I have a brand new wordpress blog. I installed the plugin exactly as described. It looks fine as if it were installed correctly, but all I get is "The e-mail could not be sent." when I test it. Any ideas?

Ha! "Let’s start by saying that if the only reason you’re worried about the load speed of the pages on your Web site is because now Google is using it as a ranking factor, I feel sorry for the people who come to your site."

Exactly. Nothing is more frustrating then watching a site take forever to load, especially on a mobile device.

But it's great as a scare tactic. People will finally try to reduce page load times, because if they don't, their Google rankings will vanish =)

Valid points, and I tend to agree with most but I think you're missing one key thing: this announcement is garnering news b/c it's Google "pulling back the curtain" a little bit on their search algorithm. No, it's not a major influencer in SERPs, but it is one more "piece of the puzzle" that people can use to try and influence those SERPs, so in a big picture view it does garner some importance.

But, as you say, if you're not looking at sight performance independent of your site search optimization, you may have bigger problems to consider.
